The Master Craftsman is a heartwarming tale of father/son relationships and incredible gifts of love.

This is the story of the frustrations, munderstandings and conflict between fathers and sons and the story of redemtion. It is the story of forgiveness and love and of the women who sustained their men. It is the novel of a man who has a life-threatening situation who has a chance for life if he is man enough to accept it.
It is a book that is well researched. The author has gone to great lengths to learn about the medical aspects she presents in the story and the crafts that she writes about.

Lila Hopkins grew up in New Mexico but for the past 11 years has lived in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. Weave Me A Song grew out of her love for the mountains and her admiration of the people she has met in Avery County.

5 Vital Components to Your Lasting Writing Career

You've heard the old axiom: “Don't build your house on the sand.” Well, the same holds true for your writing career. Ask yourself, as a writer or author, are you putting up a temporary tent or building an institution? If you’re just beginning to write, embark on building your success strategy early - smart and from the start! After all, there is no such thing as a lucky break in the field of publishing. Authors who make progress, make progress! In other words, thriving authors take devoted action, understanding the importance of having a strong foundation.

There are five vital components to include in your author infrastructure:

Talent – Notice that talent is only one of the five components. In other words, to get ahead, you need talent, but you can’t ride on it. The great thing about talent is that it can be developed, no matter what your Aunt Sue told you about your lack of ability. If you can take constructive feedback and use it to improve your work, then you have a much higher chance at finding success and acclaim. Nobody at the top started out as a star. They let themselves be coached, trained and molded until they got great. They had the patience to stay in pursuit of their dream as it slowly grew – and the ability to fail and to get back up and do better.

Enthusiasm – Having Passion (with a capital P) for your topic or genre is tantamount to attracting agents, publishers and readers. If you light up while talking about your project, that energy will translate to others’ confidence in you. If certain days get you down, or if dudes make you doubt, get in the habit of reaffirming your star quality. Know you are capable of your biggest dreams and show the world through the way you carry yourself every day. When I was worn out and wondering if I’d ever finish my book, I got in a bubble bath and read Bird by Bird – Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott. I laughed so hard at how similarly odd the thoughts and musings of writers are. That gave me the kick I needed to stay confident.

Flexibility – A lot of books on the bestseller list started out with a very different outline or storyline. Great books (and great writers) are built by being aware of the trends and interests of the target culture. Now, nobody is going to understand fully the genius behind your idea at first, so of course you have to have a healthy amount of sticking to your guns on your tale or topic matter. But if you can find a few things you can be flexible on, especially if you are getting advice from an expert, it will likely save you time and take you to new levels.

Niche – The cement to your foundation is definitively your niche, which we’ll cover in more depth in a future blog. Your niche is what is different about you – or what unique service or specialization you will deliver to your audience. Some authors have the ability to separate themselves from their personal perspective long enough to write with a specific audience in mind. This is a developed talent. With practice or training, all writers can release themselves from their own view to connect with what the reader will be feeling and thinking when they read the novel or non-fiction book. Identifying your niche and identifying with your target audience are steps that too many authors skip. But remember that this is what you’ll use to snag media interviews and a profusion of other promotional opportunities.

Creative Thinking – This final component is going to help you make connections, figure out how you are going to do this financially, and basically problem solve. Successful authors, like all people who reach their goals are programmed (or have programmed themselves) to take misfortunes and turn them into fortunes. Ultimately, your success is going to be determined by the way you think, so think about how you can make it work!

In summary, if you build your writing career on creative problem-solving, and employ talent, flexibility, excitement and focus, your name will surely be known by your target audience for years to come.

From Publishing to Sales - One Author's Experience

You have a great education, but your training wasn't in creative writing! Still, you're feeling a strong push that won't leave you alone. Something tells you to begin forming your story in every spare moment you can find. Writing your book awakens something hibernating in you. The idea of being an author is exciting and confusing, but you're willing to learn.

Authors like you are born every day. I'd like to introduce myself by sharing my own Publishing to Sales story....maybe you can relate.

I was one of those spontaneous authors. I wrote Help Is On Its Way because I had to. I had no training in composition or marketing. But still, I wrote. I wrote from many places over a nearly two year period.

I learned how to write a query letter, and sent a few out to a agents that were listed through online networks as being interested in the subject matter of my memoir. (More details on this in future blogs.) Out of about 15 queries, I received one inquiry from a small publisher called Kunati. I mailed in my manuscript.

I wondered, if Kunati had taken 8 months just to respond to my query, how long would it take them to review and publish my manuscript, if (and that is a big if) they liked my full work?

While I waited on Kunati, I continued to edit and refine my work, feeling like the story needed more improvement. I paid two award-winning editors to review the story for its public appeal. It took me another few months to incorporate their suggestions. By the time I finished my revisions, I still had not heard from Kunati. That's when friend invited me to a local author's meetup where Lulu.com reps just happened to be present. During that meeting, I got to talk to Lulu authors, and decided to publish with Lulu.

It took many weeks to get all the print mistakes and cover art corrected. Once I did, I switched to publish with Booksurge, an Amazon.com company so that I could choose a more shelf-friendly book size and be listed on Amazon easily. It was very inexpensive to sign with Booksurge because I did all the typesetting and page numbering myself and downloaded the book as a print-ready PDF.

After the book was listed on Amazon, I worked to make a name for myself - to develop a website and brand that readers could identify with. I wrote articles, developed professional partnerships, and built a website community until my name became synonymous with the topic of childhood sensitivity and personal empowerment.

I will expound on forming partnerships, writing articles, etc. in future blogs. If you have specific questions about these free forms of marketing, please ask them in the comment section of this blog.

After 14 months, I had the fortune to be asked to speak and write on the topics of empowerment and childhood sensitivity.

This coincided with the re-release of a third edition of the memoir that included more revisions to the story and photos, based on professional feedback and experience I'd gained from the year I'd spent marketing and studying successful authors in the field.

In April of 2008 I ran a one-day Amazon.com promotion. This was a good way to form lasting partnerships with professionals in the field associated with my brand.

All along the way I studied the industry from successful authors. I now enjoy helping other authors find success much more easily and even more profitably than I did!

Manuscript Review

Once you have submitted your manuscript to Strategic Books, it will be sent to the Manuscript Review Department. Here an editor will go over your manuscript and evaluate what changes need to be made (if any).

In this phase, your work will be scrutinized for things such as: typographical errors, spelling and grammatical errors, punctuation errors, and syntax errors. The editor will set out a list of errors in these categories that need to be corrected, and will advise you if you need an edit by a professional editor, or if he/she feels you can make the corrections yourself.

Examples of punctuation errors:

"I'm home", she called out "is anybody here"? Plopping down on the stool in front of the counter she reached for the cookie jar, it was full of her favorite chocolate chip cookies!!!!
  • comma goes inside quotation marks
  • question mark goes inside quotation marks
  • comma goes after "out"
  • comma goes after "counter"
  • use semicolon, instead of comma after "jar"
  • use only one exclamation mark

Examples of grammatical errors:

She thought it was to good to be true. But it was all happening so quick.

  • too
  • However
  • quickly

Examples of syntax errors:

When it wouldn't fit through the doorway because it was too big, she had tried to even turn it sideways.

  • It was too big and would not fit through the doorway, even after trying to turn it sideways.

A check will be done on the title of your book, to find out if that title is currently in use, and the author's name will be checked for other authors by the same name.

Example: There is another author by the same name, how may we distinguish you?
(middle initial, title, pen name, etc.)

Example: There is another book with the same title. Have you researched other titles, or would you prefer to add a subtitle?

To prepare the Production Department for receiving your manuscript, the Manuscript Review editor will look at formatting issues such as:

  • When submitting your manuscript, please ensure that all chapters are in one Word document.
  • The first page of your manuscript should be the title page. This should contain the title of your book, your name, your by line, and word count.
  • Do not use hard returns as this creates a nightmare in the production department. (hard returns are created when you press 'enter' after each line)
  • Pictures, sketches, diagrams, graphs, charts and photos should be emailed in a separate folder
  • Headers and footers should not be manually typed at the top of each page, but inserted from the tool bar, from tools, insert, header and footers
  • All font should be in Times New Roman, 12 pt.
  • Margins should be 1" on all four sides

While this may sound overwhelming to the first-time author, do not fear as there is nothing that cannot be corrected on our end. However, we do ask that you do your best in these areas, and then leave the rest up to us.

Sometimes authors have written about, or included somewhere in their book, real people; photographs; sketches; medical or legal advice; or other issues that we feel need an evaluation by our legal team. The Manuscript Review editor will note this. If you should see the box checked "Legal Review Needed," this is nothing to worry about, it is simply standard procedure.

When this phase has been completed, you will receive a Manuscript Review Report, so that you are always kept up to date with where your manuscript is in the overall process of turning it into the finished product.

At Strategic Books, we want your book to be as error free as possible, and the Manuscript Review process is just one of our valuable aids that help insure this. Our goal is to be as proud of your book as you are!
