Floor displays create a focal point for your book. Stores and shops
are great avenues for book sales. Once the book is placed in stock
it is imperative that your book standout from other books and merchandise.
You may want to print this email and put it aside until your materials arrive. There will be two shipments. One will be from me, and the other will come directly from our display supplier. So let's talk about the display first. It is a countertop display that will hold several books at one time. You will use this one for signing events, but these displays are also good to draw attention to your book in a store environment. We offer a floor display that holds more books, however they require more space and you will want to speak with the vendor before ordering floor displays. Countertop displays use a lot less space, and they truly make your book stand out! Unfortunately, some of the more traditional bookstores discard displays. I suggest an author take the display into the vendor loaded with books and speak directly with the CRM or the person responsible for setting up displays -- often that is the store owner. Seeing that the display is small, sturdy and attractive will often get you further than trying to describe what it is going to look like on the counter. And, of course, you can hold it in your hand and say 'you can see how it draws the customer's eye to the book and encourages them to pick it up and look through it. It's a great way for you and I to sell my book!' So -- the shipment you receive from me will have a 7 X 5.5 inch display header inside. Note that there is a removable backing over sticky stuff. Do not remove the backing until your display arrives. The display comes with a flat 'board' in the packing box that will affix to the top of the display -- that is the display header; where you will put the sticky backed label. First place a copy of your book in the display so you can judge how close to the top of the display header you want to place the label. Turn the label over and remove the top left corner first -- then l place the label on the header, lightly pressing the upper right corner into place. At this point, the label is easily removed for better placement. Once you have it where you like it -- gently remove the rest of the backing and attach to the header. After the entire lable is in place, use a credit card to rub over the lable to firmly set the label to the header. Secondly, take a look at the bookmark enclosed in the shipment and consider: Do you like the look? I did not spend a lot of time on the verbage -- I will make corrections on the completed product and email you the final before ordering more bookmarks. However, this is the chance for you to let me know if you want to write something you feel is more appropriate. If you decide to write something on your own, consider the space allotment. Bookmarks are a great tool for getting people to buy your book. They are for giving away. You will leave bookmarks in places that sell the book, hand out at events (signings, reading, etc.), and for dropping into promotional packages. We will talk more about bookmarks later, but the point is to have people to pick them up for consideration of future purchase or to share with someone they think might like your book. Third -- this is a large poster. It is a prop for your events. Some stores such as Barnes & Nobel will make up posters announcing that you will be appearing in their store for a signing at a given date. However, most other appearances will require that you bring your own props. My favorite prop is to bring an artist floor easle and place a poster with a more rigid back (I can get that for you). It shows very well. The enclosed poster is good for a store that will allow you to place it in a large window. The posters for wall displays in stores are smaller -- much easier to convince a store owner to display. Finally -- I enclosed a small print that looks identical to the header display. I want you to think creatively about how to promote your book, and share your thoughts with me. I have many other avenues we will discuss as we go along, but I want to get a feel for what excites you when we talk about promoting your work. One last thought -- have you thought of a book debut event for The Passions of Roxanna? If so, share your thoughts. I haven't read the book, but I believe I have some great ideas to get this kicked off for you! Let me know when the shipments arrive. I'm always here for your questions and idea. Thank you!
