The EPK

Today, we see the way technology has impacted different industries and the literary world is no exception.

The Press Kit has been through many makeovers. The beginnings of the press kit were nice, slick folders that contained clippings, photos, bios and a business card. Presently, the electronic age brought us the EPK or the Electronic Press Kit. While the hardcopy kit is still applicable, the EPK is much more flexible, interactive and most important…versatile.

So what is the EPK and why is it so accessible? The EPK is a digital file with all publicity materials loaded into it and plays like a 2-10 minute movie. It is virtually the same as the hardcopy counterpart, but with enhanced features and additions. A well done EPK will be entertaining as well as informative; it contains music, voice over narrations, video, trivia/fun facts and any other material appropriate to the client being promoted. The EPK, once created, can be loaded to a website, burned to a CD/DVD, uploaded onto a flash drive/memory stick and synced to a PDA or IPod type device. The latter two have become the most popular as the journalist quickly receives the EPK on their Blackberry without being in attendance at the press junket or conference.

EPKs are meant for media outlets; reporters aren’t too interested in what other media has said about the topic at hand; only just if its thumbs up or thumbs down for the topic, and a ballpark jest of how much exposure/interest that topic has received from other media.  So you see, they already assume this is all thumbs up as the EPK is dedicated in promoting the author, so putting as many different pages (to a point) of different articles about this will convince them this isn’t something their contemporaries have overlooked, so hence nor should they.

Here are a couple of our Author EPKs that are getting our clients exposure and earning them attention in the media spotlight:
